Feeder Cattle Weighted Average Report for 12/06/2018

Receipts: 5,871 Last Week: 5,975 Year Ago: 5,050

Compared to last week: Steer calves 400-799 lbs sold mostly steady
to 3.00 lower, with the exception of 550-649 lbs calves which sold
mostly 5.00 lower. Heifer calves 350-399 lbs sold mostly 5.00-10.00
higher; 400-549 lbs heifers sold steady 3.00 higher; 550-699 lbs
heifers sold steady to 3.00 lower. Yearling steers and heifers were
all too lightly tested to develop any market trend. Quality this week
was average to attractive, however quality overall was not as
attractive as last week. Many feeder offerings were weaned this week
which allowed buyers to put together loads of calves in light flesh.
Weaned calves offered slight premiums throughout the sale. Calves
straight off the cow are begining to show flesh differences and buyers
are discounting these cattle for being fleshy in some instances.
Demand for feeder cattle was mostly moderate this week on heavy
offerings. Last weeks snow storm has left pen and lot conditions
muddy throughout much of the feeding region. This has supressed demand
for feedlot ready feeders slightly. Demand for lightweight cattle
sutiable to run on grass remains mostly good. Many bidders and buyers
were in the stands this week. Market activity was moderate to active.
Weigh up cows sold on mostly moderate demand this sale for moderate
offerings. Packer showed slightly lighter demand for cows for immidiate
harvest this sale. The cutter cow cutout has struggled slightly following
the Thanksgiving holiday, however it has gained back some of its value
in the last few days. The cutter cow cutout as of todays close was 155.40,
0.27 higher than Wednesdays value. Packers continue to show good demand
for feeding cows and cows to hold for the holiday break. Feeding and packer
buyers bid agressivly over offerings today as they pushed to fill loads
and secure market share. Feeding cows sold generally steady with mondays
sale. Slaughter cows sold fully steady in a narrow compairson. Slaughter
bulls sold steady to firm in a narrow compairson. The feeder cattle offering
was 52 percent steers and bulls 48 percent heifers with 35 percent weighing
over 600 lbs. Todays supply consisted of 89 percent feeder cattle, 1.5
percent slaughter cow, near half of one percent slaughter bulls, 8 percent
feeding cows and bulls and cows returning to the country, balance bred
cows, heifers, and pairs. ***Next sale will be Monday Dec. 10th, 2018 with
the Northland bred cow special. No feeders sell***
